Brand Snapshot | Selfridges’ Ultralounge
Each week we bring you the most up-to-date news, trends, campaigns, and launches from Walpole’s members. Today, Selfridges’ Ultralounge, part of their summer-long Music Matters campaign.
The Ultralounge is Selfridges’ response to the continuing challenge emerging music acts, unable to pay for expensive venues, face when seeking to perform live on stage to hone their craft.
According to the Music Venue Trust, 40% of all live music venues in London, especially the smaller ones, have been forced to close in the past 10 years, driven out of business chiefly because of rising rent.
As a long-time supporter and sponsor of emerging talents (from fashion to all forms of arts), Selfridges wanted to help bring this issue to the fore through the opening of this new live music venue.
The Ultralounge, which is sponsored by Smirnoff, was designed in collaboration with London-based outfit TEM Studio who have worked on light and sound design for stage shows and one-off performances for the likes of Jay Z, Beyonce and Lady Gaga.
TEM Studio have created a state-of-the-art low central stage within the 3,500 sqft, 170 capacity venue which allows for a totally immersive experience between the audience and the artist.
The technology, specially engineered for the Ultralounge stage, allows for imagery, videos, graphics as well as live footage of the artist performing to be projected, simultaneously if required, not only through the giant gossamer screens surrounding the stage but also directly on the audience. The stage is also set up for live broadcast through the artists’ social media platforms and through Selfridges.com.
The Ultralounge runs until the end of September and showcases two series of musical evenings:
– New Music Night, every Wednesday, an evening dedicated to newly emerging acts (see below for the full line up)
– Selfridges Presents, every Thursday, an evening dedicated to showcasing rising stars of the music scene across a number of genres (see below for the full line up)
Multiple acts performs each night a short set on both Wednesdays and Thursdays and tickets can be booked via Selfridges.com and range from £17 and £24. Proceeds from the sales of all tickets will go to the Music Venue Trust.
The opening of the Ultralounge is part of a summer-long campaign called Music Matters At Selfridges which was devised as an alternative summer musical festival which also includes special fashion collaborations with grime artist Skepta and superstar rapper producer ASAP Rocky, along with an exclusive pop up by Rye Wax, the legendary London vinyl store.
