Meet the Maker | Andy Saunders, Mark Wilkinson and Smallbone
Each week we ‘meet a maker’ from within the Walpole membership, shining a light on the highly skilled craftspeople creating British luxury products and experiences. Today, introducing Andy Saunders, Research and Development Designer/Maker at Walpole member Mark Wilkinson and Smallbone of Devizes.
What do you do?
“Working in the R&D workshop for the past 20 years alongside Mark Wilkinson has been an exciting and extremely creative environment to work in. As part of a team, we aim to create beautifully crafted pieces, ranging from sculpted furniture to unique fixtures and fittings.
“I draw on my experience over the last three decades working my way up through the company, from Finishing Shop to Machine Shop to Furniture Making, gleaning skills and techniques from the time-served craftsmen as I progressed.”
What do you love most about your job?
“I love problem-solving in the workshop and gain the greatest satisfaction from finding unique solutions to special projects. The goal is not just for ‘functional and well made’, but ‘tactile and beautiful’ in whatever we create. When all these points are reached, I feel I can stand back and enjoy the moment, reflecting on the design, the resolved problems, making and final finishing of the completed piece.”
The wardrobe you can see me working on in the image above was designed and built for our Smallbone brand in collaboration with Wallpaper* Magazine for the their Handmade Exhibition in Milan. It pulled together ancient finishing-processes with precision joinery and modern laminated acrylic panels.
