We were delighted to welcome Lucy in conversation with Walpole's CEO Helen Brocklebank as part of our Meet the Media series getting to know the inner workings of Walpole's media members and their industry-leading editors. The pair discussed Lucy's distinguished career in publishing, how she became the youngest ever editor of a UK glossy magazine when she took the helm of (what was then) Harper's & Queen aged 29, her transformation of the magazine from Harper's & Queen to Harper's Bazaar, and her current vision for PORTER Magazine.
Lucy explained the unique proposition of PORTER and how its 360 ecosystem offers its readers a seamless Content + Commerce + Cause experience, which is informed by the extraordinary data that NET-A-PORTER has collected on its customers. The PORTER woman is intelligent, successful and, above all, global. Listening to readers, creating a global magazine with global curation and editorial from respected writers in beauty, fashion, travel and culture from around the world, puts PORTER eye-to-eye with its elevated audience.
"PORTER Magazine is for and about incredible women", she explained, what the PORTER woman needs and wants, is the foundation for every direction the magazine goes in - "this makes commercial and editorial decisions much easier".
Speaking about the latest Summer Escape issue of PORTER Magazine which collaborated with Parley for the Oceans - the organisation encouraging creators, thinkers and leaders to come together to raise awareness of the fragility of the oceans - Lucy said: "When you're in a position where you have power and airspace then you should use it wisely and for a cause".
Taking a campaigning point of view has become not only a point of differentiation for PORTER, it has been a catalyst for positive change for the whole organisation. When Prince Charles and Duchess of Cornwall recently visited YOOX NET-A-PORTER's state-of-the-art Tech Hub, they wanted to learn about the ocean campaign. Lucy was also invited to address the U.N in New York and discuss what can be done to preserve the world's oceans, proving that when tackled authentically and with realism and passion, enacting change at the highest level is an achievable goal and one that Walpole very much admires.
Finally, Lucy's favourite luxury for under a tenner: Fortnum & Mason's Orange Marmalade with Ginger.
