Established by Mats Klingberg in 2010 with a two-storey store on Marylebone’s Chiltern Street, Trunk was named a Brand of Tomorrow by Walpole just six months later, in 2011.
Trunk is unique in its approach to buying: it sources its wares internationally, from Japan to Great Britain, Italy and the US, favouring smaller scale, artisanal-led labels that have a distinct point of view — some of which it stocks exclusively in the UK. Trunk is a destination space for its international customers to discover 60+ hand-selected brands. Its edit spans categories from clothing to footwear, as well as bags and accessories, and a growing lifestyle category_id that includes grooming, fragrance and stationary.
Atmosphere is key to Trunk’s offering. The business prides itself on its warm and welcoming environment, where its informed staff are on hand to provide excellent advice and service. Inside Trunk, product is displayed on and around a mix of elegant furniture, to offer that feeling of home.
Years of on-the-ground research, data and customer service culminated in the launch of an in-house line, named Trunk, which was unveiled in 2016. Beginning with a single pair of trousers, the Trunk offering now spans the full wardrobe and is the store’s best-selling brand. In line with Trunk’s ethos for quality, the in-house range is produced in the best factories across Europe — Knitwear is produced with artisanal mills in Scotland, while suiting is made in Italy and Portugal. Trunk also offers its own made-to-measure range of shirts, suits and blazers; fitting to finished garment innovatively takes just six weeks.
An ambitious and expanding business, other destination stores have since opened. A sister store, Trunk Labs, opened at 34 Chiltern Street in 2013 to offer a dedicated space for footwear, bags and accessories. Trunk’s e-commerce site launched the same year. A partnership with Lane Crawford began in 2016, which led to the opening of Trunk’s first shop-in-shop in Hong Kong in 2017; one in Shanghai followed in 2018, and Chengdu in 2019. Trunk’s first store on mainland Europe opened in Zurich in 2018 to cater to its growing international clientele. 2020 sees Trunk celebrate 10 years in business.
