Brand Snapshot | G.F Smith presents Beyond Surface
G.F Smith is a true paper obsessive and keeper of not only the most beautiful, but the most innovative and technically advanced papers in the world. As part of the Beyond Surface take-over, award winning architect Kody Kato has been invited to create an astonishing installation made entirely from Takeo paper in the White Space.
Paper can be judged by its intrinsic quality when folded. Folding endurance tests have been used to estimate the ability of paper to withstand repeated bending, folding, and creasing and is also useful for measuring the deterioration of paper upon ageing. G.F Smith believe their papers are unsurpassed.
As part of the Beyond Surface take-over, award winning architect Kody Kato has been invited to create an astonishing installation made entirely from Takeo paper in the White Space. His gravity-defying exhibit is made of 5,500 modified Sonobe origami units which have been completed at G.F Smith’s Hull site by a team of experienced envelope makers and will then be transported for assembly to the Show Space where Kody and a group of more than 20 university design students will assemble the piece on site over a period of six days.
The installation will be on show for three months and is proudly on schedule during London Craft Week, 9-13 May.
The theme continues on the ground floor of the Show Space. An eye catching ‘test area’ that invites client participation by allowing visitors to create The Perfect Paper Aeroplane. Designed by long term collaborators Made Thought, the plinths allow visitors to explore the science behind paper making by showcasing laboratory equipment, and looking at how fold and weight are intrinsic to the performance of a sheet.
Visitors will be encouraged to create their own perfect plane with a prize of £1000 worth of paper to the design that remains aloft for the longest. A leader board will be on display throughout the exhibit.
