Brand Snapshot | People’s Choice win makes RHS history for Wedgwood’s 260th Anniversary show garden
Wedgwood’s 260th anniversary Chatsworth show garden has made RHS history as the first show garden to secure the highest number of accolades that can be achieved in all four award categories.
Last week, the Wedgwood Garden was announced as the public’s favourite at RHS Chatsworth Flower Show. The gold medal winning garden, designed by horticulturalist and RHS Ambassador, Jamie Butterworth, was voted the People’s Choice Award 2019.
Inspired by RHS founder John Wedgwood’s vision of using the power of horticulture and plants to connect people and unite communities, the garden has already been awarded a coveted RHS Gold Medal, Best in Show and Best Construction Award.
The haul of all four accolades is a first for any designer at an RHS show, and is all the more remarkable as the garden is Jamie’s first garden design at 24 years old.
Garden Designer Jamie Butterworth from Butterworth Horticulture said:
“I’m completely over the moon. Creating my first show garden for such a prestigious company has been a real privilege, and to mark such a special anniversary with four top honours is just incredible.
“I set out to create a garden that would be both welcoming and inspiring, a garden that is relatable with lots of take-home ideas. It’s wonderful that the public have taken it to their heart because I put a lot of mine into it, we all did. I’m so passionate about sharing the joy of gardening and so to receive this award in particular is humbling.
“Thank you to everyone for taking the time to vote and also to the whole team who helped make this garden happen, it couldn’t have happened without you.”
Wedgwood is the headline show partner of RHS Chatsworth Flower Show 2019.
In 1804 John Wedgwood, son of Wedgwood founder Josiah, established the Royal Horticultural Society. He had a vision of bringing gardening to everyone, to improve people’s lives through horticulture and create a sense of community
Christian Bachler, Wedgwood Senior Vice President, said: “We are delighted this garden has proved so incredibly popular – from our prized Gold Medal to Best In Show, Best Construction and now this wonderful People’s Choice Award.
“Our 260th anniversary garden showcases the deep connections between Wedgwood and the Royal Horticultural Society. As the founder of the Royal Horticultural Society, John Wedgwood set in motion what was to become one of Britain’s greatest institutions. His legacy is celebrated in this garden and his passion and enthusiasm to connect people through horticulture is clearly as relevant and popular today as ever. These four awards are a wonderful celebration of John’s tremendous legacy.”
Jamie drew inspiration from John Wedgwood’s personal garden and handpicked many plants from his original plant journal, such as sweet peas, roses, herbs and fruit trees.
The Wedgwood garden from RHS Chatsworth Flower Show will be relocated to the World of Wedgwood in Barlaston, Staffordshire. It will be in good company as it will join Jo Thompson’s Wedgwood garden from this year’s Chelsea Flower Show as well as last year’s, and also Sam Oven’s garden from the inaugural Chatsworth Flower Show.
