Mindfulness in the Sky with Winch Design

With ‘experience’ and ‘wellness’ the new frontier for luxury brands, Walpole member Winch Design has created an aircraft interior that encompasses both of these trends.

Borne from a conversation with a client who despite travelling regularly didn’t want to give up her daily yoga and mindfulness rituals, Winch Design has visualised an interior that discards hyper-masculine aviation trends, to instead create an open and light space focussed on relaxation, meditation, wellbeing, health and balance. A hectic work schedule could mean that flying offers a rare moment to pause and recharge – offering time to let go and concentrate on the present. Winch has imagined an interior which helps find those precious moments of equanimity.

The designers at Winch have concentrated on creating a private wellness retreat at the back of the aircraft, ensuring that time spent in the air needn’t interfere with a healthy lifestyle, in fact, it could contribute to it.

The design team took influence from Asian spas, Zen principals, mindfulness techniques and sustainable materials, and drew on the extensive experience they have creating award-winning spas on some of the world’s most luxurious superyachts. Deliberately stepping away from the interiors of the past, this private jet would be flooded with light and space, creating an experience quite different from anything else on the market.

At the front of the aircraft Winch has opened-up the floorplan to create a spacious room for practising yoga, with full-height mirror panels, foot-worn timber flooring and sustainable materials which accentuate the feeling of natural serenity. Moving through the cabin, a large raised Asian style day-bed creates a flexible space for rest and relaxation or a chance to shut off and meditate. Adding further to the feeling of serenity, research has shown that the background ‘white-noise’ of an aircraft acts as the perfect environment in which to practise mindfulness.

In order to accentuate the tranquil atmosphere of the cabin, the design team opted for natural fabrics, leathers and marbles, favouring raw, organic textures and patterns over man-made materials, together with softly-lit panels and harmonious feature lighting to compliment the materials. The living space opens into the bathroom, intersected by a large, glass walled aromatherapy steam-shower that joins the two spaces together, allowing natural light to flow into the bathroom, where green-onyx walls, carved stone basins and brass fittings create a feeling of top-end spa luxury.

The soft leathers used on board come from the Winch Design collaboration with Foglizzo; a celebration of the compelling textures and colours of land, air and sea, each representing Winch Design’s three disciplines: architectural, aviation and yacht design. The compelling patterns of nature found in feathers, bark and water have brought to life a unique range of versatile leathers, all of which would be perfect for this unique Yoga Concept.

Winch Design believe that private aviation should be a joyful experience and the Yoga Concept shows that luxury is no longer about gold taps and deep-pile carpets but about the quality of time, experiences and memories.
