In 2013, the Department of Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) published a Waste Prevention Programme for England (read here). The programme sets out the roles and actions for government and others to reduce the amount of waste produced in England. Defra has now launched a review of the programme, with a vision of reducing waste, improving recycling, promoting 'eco design', supporting circularity initiatives, and improving consumer education - goals highlighted in our British Luxury Sustainability Manifesto.
As part of this, Defra has opened a consultation to gather views on their proposals from industry stakeholders. As part of this process, Defra has produced a draft revised programme and opened a consultation to gather views on their proposals from industry stakeholders.
The title of the draft revised programme is Waste Prevention Programme for England: Towards a Resource Efficient Economy (read here) and its goals are as follows: increasing resource efficiency and minimising waste, reducing GHG emissions, and safeguarding our natural capital and resource security. Defra has published consultation questions to accompany this draft programme. The deadline for making a submission to the consultation is 10th June.
This important consultation provides an opportunity for Walpole to highlight the sustainability leadership credentials of the luxury sector and the progress that is being made across member businesses in how we approach these goals.
Walpole will be making a submission on behalf of members and would like your input. Please get in touch with Charlotte Keesing or Tania Pearson if you have questions or would like to provide input.
