Laurie returned to England in 2014 after a decade in the developing world. A slightly unusual career trajectory began with five years as an officer in the Scots Guards, three of them spent in Ulster at the tail end of the Troubles. Thereafter he variously set up emergency programmes in southern Sudan and Ethiopia, cleared landmines for the HALO Trust in Mozambique, Afghanistan and Cambodia, studied at the University of Cape Town, looked for gold in Liberia and ran a power station in Nairobi. He now lives off the grid in the Savernake forest with his wife and son, and is Managing Director of Savernake Knives.
