The Female Founders: Harriet Hastings, The Biscuiteers

"The starting point for any successful business is a really unique proposition and I think many women conceive their businesses with a real passion for their product and the idea behind it. E-commerce has given many more people the chance to try out ideas and find a market." Harriet Hastings founded Biscuiteers after identifying an opportunity in the food gifting market for an e-commerce brand that delivered a stylish and personalised gifting solution. Fourteen years on Harriet shares her advice for others looking to start off in the luxury industry.

IWD 2021 The Female Founders: Harriet Hastings, The Biscuiteers

Why did you choose to start your own luxury business?
I thought there was a big opportunity in food gifting – specifically an e-commerce brand that delivered a much more stylish, personalised gifting solution than I saw in the market. I had just left a full time job in brand marketing and was keen to build my own brand.

What is it about British luxury that means new, female-led brands thrive?
I think luxury is all about brilliant design and craftsmanship. The starting point for any successful business is a really unique proposition and I think many women conceive their businesses with a real passion for their product and the idea behind it. E-commerce has given many more people the chance to try out ideas and find a market.

What advice would you give to the next generation of female founders looking to set up their own brands?
Alongside a great idea, you need a route to market. I think great marketing is critical – there are so many brilliant businesses that don’t find the customers they deserve. So think about your USPs, target customer and bring a marketing lens to all your decisions.
