As part of the leadership team at Floris since 2014, Alex Oprey has injected a new lease of life, design philosophy and overall focus into the brand. How important is it to develop a strong network in the luxury sector, and how do you do this?
It’s imperative. On a basic level, to continuously be learning, improving and developing. It’s an old cliché but you get much more back from others, the more you give. Whether within your own business structure or equally in the wider sector, it allows you to check and balance yourself, your business and your strategies through the power of many rather than the few. I trust that if you’re open, willing to share and personally passionate about what you do then it creates a positive environment to do business and your network will grow. I also have the good fortune of working for a tremendous brand with deep roots in luxury which has given me a platform to work with some wonderful people.
What is the key lesson your career has taught you?
Be flexible. Having confidence in yourself and your ideas while having the same confidence in the ability to change course if you think there is an improved direction. It’s the best way to better yourself professionally and personally. Find good mentors and absorb as much as possible. Listen and learn and build a good network. It’s a small world so treat people well.
