The Walpole Power List | The Game Changers: Simon Mitchell, Co-Founder, Sybarite

“It has always been my strong belief to never rest on one’s laurels and to look far ahead – you are only as good as the last project you designed and delivered and we must always strive to break barriers and cross boundaries and bring something original to the world of retail and hospitality. Sybarite has never been afraid to be a maverick.”

Introducing Simon Mitchell, a Walpole Power List Game Changer: one of the innovators within British luxury in pursuit of something new – where they lead, others follow. Simon co-Founded architectural studio Sybarite in 2002, and since then the team have carried out more than 2500 projects all over the world.

Simon co-founded Sybarite with Torquil McIntosh in 2002. The founding principles were to create a global studio focusing on retail design with a highly collaborative culture. Simon brings his natural hands-on practicality to Sybarite’s architectural and design projects and is intrinsically involved across all the operational and client facing aspects of the studio. Sybarite has delivered 2,500 projects to date, including global store designs for notable luxury monobrands and renowned department stores. The business concentrates on delivering innovative and experiential environments for retail and hospitality.

What does it mean to be a named Walpole 2020 Power List winner?
Firstly, my sincere thanks for including me and, by extension, Sybarite on this list, I am privileged to be in such good company.

Sybarite’s ambition from the outset was to achieve a global reach but to remain firmly rooted in Britain where myself and my business partner and our studio are based.

Sybarite continues to seek out opportunities for collaboration with Best in Class, many of which are British companies at the forefront of their specialisms. We focus on game-changing retail design at the high end of the spectrum. It is through our deep and fundamental understanding of luxury that we can be agile and offer a continually evolving architectural and design ethos that remains relevant.

The Walpole 2020 list recognises and unites 50 different perspectives on British luxury. How we each interpret and communicate this creatively is what gives us enduring power. Sybarite’s work in China over the last 8 years is testament to this and has also fortunately stood us in good stead over the Covid-19 crisis.

Why do you think you were named on the list this year?
I think that Sybarite’s continual expansion is reason for such recognition. Steering the loyal workforce of 60+ through the complexities of the ‘new normal’ for business practice, performance and productivity since March 2019 has been no mean feat.

It has always been my strong belief to never rest on one’s laurels and to look far ahead – you are only as good as the last project you designed and delivered and we must always strive to break barriers and cross boundaries and bring something original to the world of retail and hospitality. Sybarite has never been afraid to be a maverick.
