The Walpole Power List The Gurus: Margaret Sweeney, Director of Business Development at G . F Smith

"I moved to London at 18 dreaming of a fashion career. Scared but buoyed by the confidence and work ethic my amazing parents instilled in me – believing that following my passion meant anything was possible.

Remarkably, my first job as an office junior at GF Smith grew into a 30 year career at an innovative, empowering company I feel as passionate about today as ever. As Director of Business Development, I work with so many great colleagues, and I’m privileged to meet and work with so many inspiringly talented people across the world’s luxury brands – including the great fashion houses."

What does it mean to you to be named a Walpole 2020 Power List Winner?

I take great pride in GF Smith’s role as a patron of this extraordinary organisation and see our membership - and my involvement – as a privilege. I get to work with such passionate and talented people who never fail to inspire me. So to be recognised in this way by people I admire and who I learn so much from is truly humbling. Thank you!

Why do you think you were named on the list this year?

A mistake maybe? I can only imagine it’s because I’ve worked with so many gifted and creative people on hugely impactful collaborations in what has been such a surreal and challenging year for everyone, and that some of their remarkable achievements have undeservedly ended up reflecting on me.
