12 million girls under the age of consent are married each year. Globally, that number had been on the decline, but sadly 12 million girls are still married every year and progress is at risk due to COVID-19 as girls are kept out of school and poverty increases.
I am thrilled to be working with VOW which raises funds and awareness to support local grassroots organisations and with 100% of the money raised going to these organisations. But the irony is not lost on me that at the same time as hundreds of thousands of brides across Britain are prevented from marrying due to the pandemic restrictions, every three seconds somewhere in the world a girl under the age of consent is married.
All this week in the lead up to to International Day of the Girl on Sunday, VOW will be highlighting the issue of child marriage with an initiative “Take the #VowForGirls”. For simply sharing the campaign video, commenting, and/or sharing a selfie with your hand raised as you take the #VowForGirls on social media, $1 will be donated to VOW up to $85,000.
