Carol Lovell shares her Out of Office essentials

Out of Office
5th August 2022

Walpole: In a world where we’re always available, how do you separate your personal time from your work time?

Carol Lovell: I don’t think a business owner ever does! It’s not something I have achieved after nine years running STOW.

What’s one thing you do after the work day to help you unwind?

I’m very late to practice yoga on a regular basis but I discovered Yoga with Adriene recently and it’s amazing for strength, flexibility and post work decompressing.

What activity do you do in your time away from the office that helps you relax and recentre after a stressful week?

Walking and cycling if it’s from home. Mountain walking and sailing if we are further afield. I have always ridden and owned horses, but recently replaced four legs for wheels and sails when I lost the horse love of my life. Anything outdoors and physical suits me, really.

What’s something you’ve read, listened to or seen in your spare time that’s helped you at work?

I like reading and listening to Mary Portas on Instagram. She raises questions which make me think about our values and how we work with each other.

After home and the office, where’s your favourite third space?

At the end of our garden looking out over wide fields and big skies, with my family and some wine.

On Sunday night, how do you prepare yourself for the week ahead?

I get to grips with who is where in the family and in the office, look at my diary, panic, then have a bath.

Best reason you've had to turn your Out of Office on recently?

To collect my daughter from the airport after 9 months away working in Lake Louise during her gap year.

The OUT OF OFFICE hotlist

Your happy place anywhere in the world: Fast-galloping over stubble.

Your favourite bar or restaurant: Gara Rock Hotel in South Devon enoying a fresh shellfish platter.

Something you've listened to or read recently that you'd recommend: I’m currently reading Great Circle by Maggie Shipstead. It's about a female pilot during the Twenties and it reminds me of some the famous adventurers that inspired me to set up STOW.

A hobby you'd like to cultivate: Painting big landcsapes

A luxury that’s actually a necessity: Time

Best luxury under £25: Chocolate
