Today, Walpole launches its Tourism White Paper, looking at the growing size and importance of the high-end traveller to luxury brands, how the UK is well placed to seize the opportunity of this growing market, what challenges lie in our way and outlining a 10-point plan to address these obstacles.

There are now 59 million high-end travellers worldwide, and the market is forecast to grow to $391bn by 2028. These visitors could bring huge benefit to the UK economy, as they spend 14 times as much as other tourists, with £8 of value generated for the wider community for every £1 spent. 

The UK is well placed to seize this advantage, with a cultural and sporting calendar jam-packed with occasions that attract these tourists, with 20 new luxury hotels opening between 2022 and 2027, and countless other unique assets that we should be proud of.

However, crime and safety, as well as the UK’s competitiveness compared to other destinations, are a concern.

To address this, Walpole has a 10-point plan to address these concerns, and supercharge the UK as the best place for luxury consumers to travel, including reforming regulation, better co-ordination between government and business to fight crime, new incentives for visitors to shop in the UK, and a more strategic approach from government in selling the UK to this important consumer group.

This White Paper is designed as a start to the conversation. We want to hear feedback from our members about what else we can do to appeal to this vital group of customers, and what more is needed to address some of the challenges we are facing.
