Walpole: Tell us about the history of your brand…

Andrew Foulkes: The Newt in Somerset is a 2,000-acre estate rich in heritage, from ancient woodlands to the remains of a 4th-century Roman Villa that once occupied the site. The modern estate has been shaped around this layered history, restoring traditional farmland, re-establishing orchards and gardens, and creating a hospitality experience rooted in the timeless rhythms of the Somerset countryside. Our ethos since opening has been to honour the land’s past while stewarding it responsibly for the future.

What is your brand best known for?

We are renowned for our working estate, exceptional gardens, orchard-to-glass cyder, luxury hotel and spa, and our commitment to regenerative farming. The Newt is celebrated for its strong sense of place, garden-led cuisine and immersive member experiences throughout the year.

What has been a significant achievement in your company’s timeline?

A defining milestone has been the creation of a fully integrated, circular farming system where livestock, orchards and crops support each other. This achievement reflects our dedication to sustainability, soil health and a holistic approach to land stewardship.

Why do you love the brand?

We love The Newt because it is a living, breathing estate where nature, hospitality and craft work in harmony. Every detail – from the gardens and orchards to the spa and food, expresses a philosophy rooted in respect for the land. It is a place that feels authentic, restorative and deeply connected to its surroundings.

Why does your brand represent the very best in British luxury?

British luxury is defined by heritage, craftsmanship and a profound relationship with landscape. The Newt embodies these qualities through individually designed rooms, seasonal and locally grown produce, botanical spa treatments and sustainable farming practices. Our approach to luxury is refined yet natural, celebrating the beauty and richness of the British countryside.

What attracted you to becoming a Walpole member?

We seek to share our story, ethos, and vision with the luxury community that represents British excellence. Having worked with members previously; expanding our horizons, learning from the best and working with Walpole members creates a natural progression for The Newt in Somerset story.

If you could collaborate with another Walpole member, which one would you choose?

We would love to work with Penhaligon’s. The elegance, sense of purpose, and history continue to push the boundaries of quality, storytelling and sophistication.

Tell us about an exciting development or new launch for your brand in the coming months?

The Newt is set to expand in spring 2026 with the launch of Yarlington Lodge, a beautifully restored Grade II-listed Georgian country house. Designed as an elegant private retreat, the lodge will offer accommodation for up to 32 guests across the main house and two cottages, along with its own outdoor pool, tennis court, cinema room, show kitchen, glasshouse, orchards and walled garden.
