Luxton reimagined the new Wedgwood patterns with a living sculptural installation visualised in the artist’s East Sussex studio. Using florals, botanicals, taxidermy and live animals, Luxton created a multi dimensional installation involving sculptural, collage, photographic and hand painted techniques.
The finished three dimensional sculpture was photographed in over thirty different sections by Luxton who then digitally stitched the artwork together in hundreds of layers before applying hand finished details, including water droplets and images of real life poison dart frogs. Once completed, artisan wallpaper company and exclusive Wedgwood retail partner, Feathr, reproduced Luxton’s design as a 6 x 3 metre wall mural.

Claire Luxton’s aesthetic is deeply inspired by the natural world and often concerns itself with the tensions between nature and technology. Florals and butterflies are her most frequently recurring motifs, but they are seen through layered collages mixed with photography or artwork projected onto the side of buildings in public spaces.
“I’ve always been super interested in nature and the environment, especially how humans interact with nature and with the objects and materials of the physical world” explains Luxton, the artist adds
“At its core, my practice is about exploring the balancing act between our relationships as humans with nature and then, our new found reliance on and exploration of technology.”
Claire Luxton’s studio is based in England and for the Wonderlust collaboration the artist was given unique access to the extensive Wedgwood archive of patterns, botanical illustrations and reference drawings to research the project, before seeing 3D prints and visual layouts of the new Wonderlust patterns produced by the Wedgwood design team. When seeing the pieces that acted as inspiration for her colourful wall mural for the first time, Luxton’s initial reaction was “The collection is amazing, it’s me in a teacup! After so many months researching the archive, to finally see the designs in real life is truly inspiring, each piece feels like an art object, they’re just so precious.”
