Tiago Restani shares his Out of Office essentials

In our Out of Office interview series, we speak to Walpole member executives at the top of their game about how they live their lives away from their desks – the habits that help them decompress, the activities that re-centre their minds, and the little luxuries that they can't live without. This week, it's the turn of Walpole's own Director of Development & Memberships, Tiago Restani...

Out of Office Tiago Restani shares his Out of Office essentials

Walpole: In a world where we’re always available, how do you separate your personal time from your work time?

Tiago Restani: I think that these days it’s very difficult to separate personal time from work time. We tend to always be on with our mobile phones and in our heads, especially if you’re passionate about what you do. The most important thing for me is turning off notifications on my phone when I’m with family and friends.

What’s one thing you do after the work day to help you unwind?

One of things that gives me a lot of pleasure is cooking. The perfect set up is to open a nice bottle of red wine (I'd recommend Aalto from Ribera del Duero, Spain), put some lo-fi music on my KEF speakers and let my self go on the colours, textures, smell and tastes of the finest ingredients and the rituals of cooking a delicious dinner.

What activity do you do in your time away from the office that helps you relax and recentre after a stressful week?

I love sports and to keep in shape. I used to surf a lot, but since I moved to the UK the cold temperatures and distance from the sea have stopped me from doing it. Instead, I cycle, I go to the gym a few times a week, and I play tennis. I also do something that it’s been with me since childhood: skateboarding.

What’s something you’ve read, listened to or seen in your spare time that’s helped you at work?

I recently went to the new exhibition by our member, Tiffany & Co, at the Saatchi Gallery, Vision and Virtuosity. It was so inspiring to see how the brand used its DNA and history to create an amazing show. The incredible interactive video walls are worth a visit, even before you get to the diamonds!

After home and the office, where’s your favourite third space?

My third space is exploring the world. I am a huge fan of travelling and experiencing different cultures and gastronomies. In the past ten years, every time I have the opportunity to jump on a plane and visit somewhere different I do it. In 2019 I was able to visit several countries on five different continents. After two years of close-to-no travelling, I’m really looking forward to getting out there once again.

On Sunday night, how do you prepare yourself for the week ahead?

I have to say it’s probably the most relaxed moment of the week. I just sit on my sofa listening to some music (I care a lot about my Hi-Fi audio system) and go through my work calendar.

Best reason you've had to turn your Out of Office on recently?

My recent trip to Portugal to reconnect with friends and family.

The OUT OF OFFICE hotlist:

Your go-to Out of Office outfit: I normally wear a lot of black: black AllSaints trousers with a black Cos T-shirt and some colourful New Balance limited-edition sneakers.

Your happy place anywhere in the world: Sagres in south of Portugal. It's the best place to connect with sea, earth and wind, surrounded by untouched wilderness.

Your favourite bar or restaurant: BRAT on Redchurch Street in London. Order the whole Turbot, and choose anything from their superb wine selection!

Something you booked recently that you'd recommend: The Future Shock exhibition at 180 The Strand is absolutely mind-blowing. An experience that blurs the boundaries between physical and virtual.

A hobby you'd like to cultivate: Wine tasting – and completing at least 2 levels.

A luxury that’s actually a necessity: Being spontaneous.

Best luxury under £25: A box of “pasteis de nata” from Santa Nata in Covent Garden.
