"Every day at Harrods is a balance of honouring the historic, iconic elements of our business, while modernising and innovating to maintain our position as the world’s leading luxury retailer.
One area we were long overdue a change was our iconic carrier bag. Unchanged for almost 50 years, the Harrods green bag was as much a London souvenir as the beautiful gifts it held. However, this internationally recognised symbol of global luxury had long been due a makeover. Even more importantly, as we work to reduce waste across our business, we need to use far fewer bags.
I am proud to say that Harrods has now replaced our plastic carrier bags with FSC-certified, 100% recyclable paper bag, made from 40% recycled materials. We are also working to halve the number of bags we use in-store - taking such measures as removing them entirely from our Food Halls and Gift Shop later this year, when customers will be asked to use an existing bag or purchase a jute reusable bag instead.
Through taking these steps, as well as further initiatives to reduce waste, Harrods will continue to be every bit as iconic, just more sustainable."
