TJB Super Yachts' Tim Johnson shares his Out of Office essentials

Out of Office
11th August 2023

Walpole: In a world where we’re always available, how do you separate your personal time from your work time?

Tim Johnson: It’s important to learn to be faster, more efficient, delegate and trust your team – this is a practised skill. I’ve learned to manage on the go and now I’m an expert multi-tasker! There are no boundaries when you're a business owner – WhatsApp and voicenotes are a couple of tools that help me to communicate with my team quickly. Often I have to find time in between the gaps when I’m out of the office.

What’s one thing you do after the work day to help you unwind?

I tend to go to the gym in the middle of the day and unwind with gentle exercise in the fresh air at the end of the day. I live in Fulham by the River Thames so I enjoy walking my dog by the river in the evening, particularly at sunset. I also enjoy a quick bike ride around Bishop’s Park.

What activity do you do in your time away from the office that helps you relax and recentre after a stressful week?

I have a sailboat and thoroughly enjoy sailing. I find when I’m out on the water I disconnect from everyday life.

What’s something you’ve read, listened to or seen in your spare time that’s helped you at work?

I read a lot. The 80% Approach by Dan Sullivan has been useful in my work life. It speaks about delegation and efficiency in the office which is so important as I’m often out of the office on business, so every second with my team counts.

After home and the office, where’s your favourite third space?

Sweden. I’m there one week a month. It’s a beautiful landscape, so I’m in nature a lot which allows me to mentally switch-off and time out. A week’s reset, in a way.

On Sunday night, how do you prepare yourself for the week ahead?

A good amount of downtime is important. I like to go on a bike ride or watch a movie. It’s also really important to get a good amount of sleep to set yourself up for the week.

Best reason you've had to turn your Out of Office on recently?

I went to Capri recently to meet some of my brokers in Naples, for a client embarkation. It’s always exciting to get to know them in such stunning destinations.

The OUT OF OFFICE hotlist

Your go-to Out of Office outfit: Activewear.

Your happy place anywhere in the world: Cowdray Park, watching the Gold Cup Polo.

Your favourite bar or restaurant: Annabel’s, particularly squid or seafood – especially the calamari.

Something you booked recently that you'd recommend and why: Chelsea Flower Show, it showcases the best of British summertime culture (and it’s on my doorstep).

Something you've listened to or read recently that you'd recommend: I’m reading Blue Mind by Wallace J Nichols at the moment. It takes you back to basics and speaks about how life and nature are interconnected. It’s especially relevant for me as it largely explores how humans interact with water: how it influences us consciously and subconsciously, physically and mentally.

A hobby you'd like to cultivate: Polo.

A luxury that’s actually a necessity: iPhone.

Best luxury under £25: Gin and tonic.
