Walpole: Tell us about the history of your brand…

Joel Cadbury: The story of our brand is inspired by Lord Beaverbrook, the most famous resident of the Beaverbrook estate, whose history remains interwoven throughout the walls of our sister Surrey property, and feeds through to our London bolthole.

A kingmaker, powerbroker and sometime mischief maker, Lord Beaverbrook was a consummate politician, publicist of boundless energy, and great friend of Winston Churchill. His newspapers, the Daily Express and Sunday Express, could make or break almost anyone, and he hosted the great and the good at the Beaverbrook residence during his time there. Many original features from Lord Beaverbrook’s residency remain in The House in Surrey, along with a timeless atmosphere of glamour and style.

As a brand, it was perfectly aligned for us to bring the peerless luxury of our countryside estate to the city: inspired by Lord Beaverbrook’s time spent in London and his love of the theatre, our suites are named after famous London playhouses. The ethos of Lord Beaverbrook, is epitomised by the iconic Spitfire emblem that can be seen throughout the property - a whimsical logo. As wartime Minister of Aircraft Production, Beaverbrook famously trebled the production of Spitfires, enabling Britain to snatch victory from the jaws of certain defeat in the pivotal Battle of Britain.

What is your brand best known for?

At Beaverbrook we marry the luxury of now with a beguiling spirit of the past. Our properties blend the elegant with the familiar through excellent guest service, and pay tribute to our namesake’s glamorous past. The atmosphere of our hotels is what sets us apart; we combine the charm of our heritage with beautifully designed spaces and places in which to dine, unwind, rejuvenate and be pampered, offering something truly memorable for our guests.

What has been a significant achievement in your company’s timeline?

The opening of Beaverbrook Town House amidst the pandemic was one of our greatest achievements! Following the opening, we are proud to have successfully grown and developed our membership base, creating an exclusive community in which members can connect, experience, network and enjoy.

Alongside this, we are delighted to have achieved a number of notable accolades most especially inclusion in Tatler’s 101 Best Hotels in the World 2021, Conde Nast Traveller’s Gold List 2021 and Hot List 2022, Travel + Leisure’s It List 2022 and Reader’s Choice Awards 2022.

Why do you love the brand?

There is something extra special about our both of our hotels, where guests will feel at home, yet surrounded by a glamourous past and with access to remarkable facilities and an unwaveringly friendly team who surprise and delight at every turn.

Why does your brand represent the very best in British luxury?

Beaverbrook offers an unparalleled experience for guests in which they can indulge in history, London and five-star luxury service. Our boutique townhouse boasts a prime perch on Sloane Street, offers comforting luxury in every bedroom, an authentic Japanese restaurant with an elegant menu of flawless sushi, sashimi and nigiri, and hosts a treasure trove of carefully curated artwork from Japonisme to art deco and beyond.

Most importantly though, it is our host team who epitomise the Beaverbrook ethos by creating exceptional experiences and going above and beyond to surprise and delight our guests. Our team’s warm hospitality and thoughtfulness allow them to form a genuine connection with visitors and ensure an unforgettable journey for every guest.

What attracted you to becoming a Walpole Member?

Being involved in all we can within the Chelsea community is a top priority for us at Beaverbrook Town House. By becoming a member of Walpole, we are able to further ingrain ourselves within the local community and connect with local, luxury brands. Walpole opens further doors for us to form new relationships and continue building existing ones with our neighbours on Sloane Street and across Chelsea: it offers us access to that exclusive and very special community.

If you could collaborate with another Walpole member, which one would you choose (and what would you like to do)?

There are plenty of Walpole Members with whom we see great synergy and we would be interested in exploring many collaborative opportunities, so it would be hard to choose just one. With such a high calibre of membership we are excited about the opportunities that Walpole, and its Members, present for us. With art, history, London theatre and interior design all being key elements of our Sloane Street property, there are a number of avenues we can explore, from the theatre houses that align with our suite themes, to luxury fashion and design brands that complement our bold and unique interior design, art galleries that tie in with our collection of over 500 pieces of art throughout the hotel and jewellery brands that offer completely bespoke experiences for our members and guests.

Tell us about an exciting development or new launch for your brand in the coming months?

Beaverbrook is delighted to be extending its spirit of nostalgic, British charm with an enchanting recreation of a timeless, quintessentially English village at our Surrey Estate. Nestled within the extensive woodlands of our Surrey-based sister, Mickleham Downs Village will offer 21 guest rooms, housed across a collection of ten cottages, a restaurant, and an events space.  A new chapter in the brand’s journey, opening in September 2023, Mickleham Downs Village will offer a luxury rural adventure, in true Beaverbrook style.
