The decoration consists of three of Annie Morris’s Stack sculptures and her usual irregular spheres, precariously arranged into tall columns, and painted in vivid hues, have been translated into 2D to become stylish baubles, first free drawn by Morris and then handmade into painted wood for the finished effect. The tree tops off with a shining figure which represents one of Morris’s ‘Flower Women’ a recurring motif that appears in her work. And normally that would be where the tree description ends, except that the base is equally notable.
Khan’s creative focuses on an often forgotten element of a Christmas tree – the base. He has designed this with ‘support’ in mind – the base reinforces Morris’s sculptures representing the love and support at the very heart of relationships and family. Surrounding the base, is a two way infinity mirror illuminated in Khan’s signature blue, featured in his recent paintings. Engraved on the mirror are the words ‘Merry Christmas’ translated into over a hundred languages, creating multiple layers of script. This represents the importance of the coming together of all faiths and cultures throughout the festive time.
“We are honoured and delighted that our friends Annie and Idris have agreed to add their magical touch to our precious Connaught Christmas Tree 2021. This special tree highlights the importance of the coming together of all faiths and cultures particularly at Christmas, and we hope will be enjoyed by our guests, Mayfair neighbours and indeed all of London this festive season.”
