Introducing Longmorn, our latest Walpole member

Welcome to Walpole
1st February 2024

In 1894, adventurous John Duff established the Longmorn distillery in Scotland, complete with its own railway to transport the house’s single malt whisky across the world. Throughout its history, the company has remained steadfast in its dedication to exceptional quality, its preservation of traditional techniques and, above all, its patience – each whisky is matured for at least 18 years. Now, to mark its 130th anniversary, the brand has released two expressions of its time-honed single malt scotch whiskies: the 18-Year-Old and the 22-Year-Old.

Walpole: Tell us about the history of your brand…

Jayne Murphy: Longmorn is an icon of Speyside; it has crafted exceptional and sought-after single malt whisky since 1894. Globe-trotting and entrepreneurial founder John Duff established the distillery and introduced inventive methods to transport the whisky via rail in order to rapidly transport the single malt whisky directly from the distillery doors to all around the globe. Since then, Longmorn has consistently delivered high-quality and balanced whiskies, connecting enthusiasts worldwide.

Now, Longmorn unveils a new chapter to mark its 130th anniversary by introducing two new single malt scotch whiskies: 18-Year-Old and 22-Year-Old. Each is of exceptional quality, embodying the spirit of endurance, integrity, expertise and ambition that has long been associated with the brand, alongside a refreshed, luxurious look rooted in its heritage.

What is your brand best known for?

Longmorn has long been revered within the scotch whisky industry for creating whiskies of exceptional quality. Unmatched in their refinement and flavour, the malts from this distillery always feature a creamy toffee profile which is quintessentially Longmorn. We are now making a commitment to release single malt whiskies matured for no less than 18 years, and the newly released 18-Year-Old and 22-Year-Old single malts will be the foundations of its portfolio.

What has been a significant achievement in your company’s timeline?

From the Industrial Revolution to the digital age, Longmorn has endured and remains one of the rare scotch whisky distilleries to have ceaselessly produced whisky for 130 years – throughout world wars and grain shortage.

Joining Longmorn in 1919, Masataka Taketsura worked an apprentice to evolve his craft. He went on to become commonly known as the ‘Founding Father’ of Japanese whisky. Today, Mark Cruickshank carries the baton for managing the distillery, informed by lessons passed down from his father, who also served as Master Distiller.

Why do you love the brand?

Longmorn’s core crafting process has remained unchanged throughout its 130-year history – the way the malt is ground, mashed, fermented, and distilled has not changed. For generations, the makers have passed on their knowledge and craft ensuring high quality and consistency of flavours. The patience with which we wait for at least 18 years for the whisky to mature in casks shows our commitment to craft and quality that lies at the heart of the brand.

Why does your brand represent the very best in British luxury?

Built on the integrity of masters of their craft, Longmorn distillery has an unwavering commitment to quality and refinement. Its luxury single malt scotches are of exceptional quality, matured for a minimum of 18 years, in single batch and cask strength, making the enjoyment of Longmorn a luxurious and rarified experience.

What attracted you to becoming a Walpole member?

Given that Longmorn is steeped in history and heritage, we are aligned with Walpole’s role in actively promoting esteemed British brands across the luxury sector, and its values around heritage in particular. It is great to be associated with other brands who also embody the very best of British luxury.

If you could collaborate with another Walpole member, which one would you choose?

The Savoy has defined British luxury hospitality since its opening in 1889 – only five years before Longmorn – and has continued to innovate, whilst respecting its history. That’s why we chose the hotel and its fabled American Bar to host our first tastings for the brand’s relaunch. We believe there is a great synergy between its brand and ours – and we would love to collaborate again in the future.

Tell us about an exciting development or new launch for your brand in the coming months?

This year, Longmorn celebrates its 130th anniversary – and we’ll be doing something very special to celebrate!
