Walpole reports from the Labour Conference 2025

Walpole News
14th October 2025

Once a year, the Westminster village decamps en-masse to conference centres across Liverpool, Birmingham or Manchester. This travelling circus gives journalists, businesses and organisations like ours a unique vantage point to observe the changing political landscape and chance to engage with ministers and MPs outside of the tightly regimented environment of Whitehall and Parliament.

In 2024, the mood at the Labour Conference was gloomy, as the realities of government were dawning on politicians and their advisors. That has shifted this year, as the promises of opposition fade further into memory and the stark economic reality has become even clearer. The question of how to achieve growth has become much more prominent, and was the key theme of the Prime Minister’s speech, as well as many other discussions.

For organisations like Walpole, this presents a strong opportunity to raise the profile of our sector, and hammer home the central role that businesses like those within Walpole’s membership can play in delivering growth. Our sector's 11%-a-year growth rate is far greater than the UK-wide growth rate, so there is lots for ministers to learn from our success.

Walpole shows the importance of the luxury goods industry to our country... flying the flag for excellence, creativity and innovation in Britain. It’s worth £81bn to the UK economy, and it's great to be here with some of the best people in industry to celebrate the opportunities opening up to young people in this country to work in the best industries in the world.

However, it is also important for key decision-makers to understand what makes our sector unique; our businesses are export superstars, committed to manufacturing in the UK and combine creativity, craftsmanship and innovation to produce world-beating products and experiences.

That creativity, craftsmanship and innovation was the theme of an event Walpole co-hosted alongside The News Agents podcast, with host Jon Sopel welcoming guests (pictured above), and the British Beauty Council, at the iNHouse Lounge.

In front of a 100-strong audience of ministers, MPs, advisors, journalists and businesspeople, the Culture Secretary, Lisa Nandy MP, highlighted the value of the sector to the economy, while Walpole emphasised that the strength of our sector was underpinned by the 454,000 people employed in our brands and supply chain.

The event was the first-ever at a political party conference to be scented (care of Neal's Yard Remedies) – the balancing and calming scents were much needed by the third evening of intense networking and discussions of the conference. Likewise, copies of the new edition of the Walpole Book of British Luxury were on show to celebrate the best of our sector to our high-level political audience.

Beyond our event, Walpole spent the week in discussions with politicians and business leaders on topics as wide ranging as tax-free shopping, business rates, trade and tariffs, and protecting intellectual property.

As MPs now return to Westminster, all eyes will turn to the Budget, which comes on the 26th November. Tax-free shopping is likely to be notable by its absence from this Budget, and changes to business rates will bring challenges to those with larger premises, however the real question will be whether business again will bear the brunt of the Chancellor’s tax rises. Walpole is submitting evidence to the Treasury to make the case for our sector – and will continue to protect, promote and develop the sector’s reputation and impact with government.
