Mary McCartney tells us more about Cunard's Sea of Glamour exhibition

The Interview
1st August 2025

Prompted by a study that revealed over 256 billion images are taken every year in the UK and USA, but a mere 3% of adults store printed photos in albums, Cunard set out on a mission to preserve memories of ocean travel for posterity. The result is a new exhibition titled Sea of Glamour, curated by renowned photographer Mary McCartney, which comprises a selection of photos both taken from the cruise line company's archive and submissions from members of the public that capture the joy, excitement and romance of life on board Cunard ship's through the ages.

Having premiered at The Royal Liver Building in Liverpool back in May, the exhibition has now taken to the high seas aboard Cunard's vessels. Here, McCartney tells us more and shares some of her favourite shots...

Walpole: When you were curating the edit of photos in the exhibition, what were the key elements you were looking for in the submissions?

Mary McCartney: I was looking for images that would visually take the viewer on the journey back in time and gradually bring them up to the present day with Cunard. Striking photographs through the years to show a range of people and activities to allow the audience to really engage with the voyage. Images ranging from the glamour and elegance of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the ship's captain, to many families’ personal moments ranging from entertainment to dancing to elaborate meals and much more.

There's a mix of celebrity shots and those of members of the public in the exhibition. What was the uniting factor?

The uniting factor in this exhibition is people coming together and enjoying themselves. From the Hollywood glamour of Rita Hayworth to families enjoying jumping into the swimming pool on deck, I wanted to show a real range of memories. From the 1940s Queen Mary packed to the seams with soldiers taking them home after the war, to couples celebrating anniversaries and weddings – it's all very powerful and emotive. The photographs hold so many important moments and memories, all taken aboard.

What is the most glamorous shot in the selection, and why in your opinion does it epitomise glamour?

I particularly love the photo of Elizabeth Taylor holding her French poodle [below], as it really takes me back in time to when she was starting out in her career. She looks fresh faced and happy – and even though it’s a still frame, I can feel the sea breeze on her face.

Is there a particular favourite amongst the photos that stands out in your mind?

I love the photograph of George Harrison [below] – as it's a very natural portrait using available light, it feels personal. I got lost in the expression on his face, it allowed me to contemplate and daydream.

Was there a shot that made it into the final edit that really surprised you amongst the submissions?

The black and white portrait of the group of chefs and kitchen crew framed within the ship’s door in the main hold [below]. It is so beautifully naturally lit, and I love the contrast between the black ship surrounding them.
