Walpole member The Ned is currently in the midst of celebrating its fifth anniversay. Alongside a programme of exciting events all year long in its London location, it's also done something rather momentous to celebrate this milestone: opened a second outpost – and its first overseas. The Ned NoMad has just raised its shutters in New York City, and we've got a first-look here.
Located in on Broadway in Mindtown Manhattan just north of Madison Square Park, The Ned NoMad inhabits a Beaux Arts building that was formerly the NoMad Hotel. Opened as The Johnston Building in 1903, the beautiful limestone façade and botanitcal-inspired architectural features have inspired the interiors designed and directed by the Soho House Design team.
Much like its sister in London, the amenities in this new club are plentiful. There are 167 bedrooms in the property, ranging in size from small, cosy crash pads to a duplex suite with a private roof terrace. Split over 10 floors, all are infused with 1920s glamour – not to mention Cowshed products on tap.
On the first floor (that's ground floor to Brits reading this), you’ll find the club's two public spaces: Manhattan’s first Cecconi’s restaurant, serving modern-day Italian classics from its wood-fired oven, as well as Little Ned, a bar with 1920s-style booth seating, which serves a smaller menu of bar staples.
The members areas are located throughout the first and second floors. Ned’s Club Downstairs on the first floor encompases the Lounge (a place to eat, drink, and relax, and also the location of much of the club's cool live music and events programme), the Club Bar (where you can grab a pre-dinner cocktail), Ned’s Club Grill (the wood-panelled, members-only restaurant sepecialising in raw, plant-based and flambe dishes), The Library (a members-only co-working space by day and bar by night), and The Magic Room (a members-only event space on the second floor).
Of course, it wouldn't be an outpost of The Ned without a sun-soaked roof terrace like its London counterpart. Also available only to members, Ned's Club Upstairs features a space where you can eat and drink while absorbing breathtaking views of the New York skyline.
If you need some more visual stimulation, take in The Ned NoMad's art collection. Comprising more than 150 works with a curatorial premise of ‘A Different Century’, the collection is inspired by the building’s history and the original female owner, Caroline A Johnston. The collection asks what ‘A Different Century’ might have looked like had women, queer people, and people of colour taken their rightful place in the cultural landscape. The collection questions what representation means now, and back then. Artists include Laurie Simmons, Kambui Olujimi, Zoe Buckman, Ilana Savdie, Rachel Jones, Issy Wood, Christopher Myers, and Joseph Kosuth.
