Quills and Calligraphy Masterclass (15th May 2022, 10:00 - 17:00)
Writing with a quill on vellum (calfskin) is a heritage craft that has been practised by scribes for centuries. Spend the day learning how to write Gothic Black Letter from mediaeval times, then cut a quill from a feather from a swan’s wing, and finally write a name with the quill on a piece of vellum that you have prepared yourself. This one-day course is taught by world-renowned professional calligraphy and illuminator Patricia Lovett MBE, and is open to beginners and improvers of calligraphy.

Gaining Ground: How Ancient Craft Knowledge Can Shape Our Future (Talk/Online Talk:

To mark the launch of the May/June issue of Crafts magazine and the opening of the Crafts Council’s new exhibition Gaining Ground, the Crafts Council Gallery is hosting a discussion about how traditional craft practices can help repair our ecosystems and societies. Hear from two exhibitors from the show: basketmaker Annemarie O’Sullivan, who grows 20 varieties of willow near her East Sussex studio, and ceramic artist Jay Mistry, who has been collaborating with potters in Guyana to preserve Indigenous identity through clay. They will be joined by Daniel Olatunji, founder of the slow fashion menswear label Monad London, which works with artisans using traditional craft techniques across the globe. The talk will be chaired by Crafts magazine.

The Art of the Exceptional: A Jubilee Celebration of Makers (Exhibition: 9th May 2022 to 14th May 2022, 10:00 - 19:00; 15th May 2022, 11:30 - 18:00)
Fortnum & Mason is hosting a series of exhibitions showcasing the work of Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (QEST)-supported makers – culminating in the creation of a one-off hamper filled with handcrafted items. A celebration of excellence in craftsmanship and the beauty of the handmade, the hamper is the crowning moment at the end of a series of four exhibitions, running at Fortnum & Mason’s Piccadilly store from March until June. Floris
Joséphine de Staël in Collaboration with Floris (Exhibition: 9th May 2022 to 13th May 2022, 09:30 - 18:00; 14th May 2022, 09:30 - 18:30; 15th May 2022, 11:00 - 17:00)
Inspired by Floris’ floral perfumes, Joséphine de Staël presents a fine jewellery collection handcrafted using the ancient techniques of lost-wax casting and vitreous enamel. The main showpiece is a contemporary interpretation of a Parisian Art Nouveau jewel, featuring a dragonfly which hovers above a bed of wildflowers with exquisite plique à jour enamel wings. The piece has inspired a collection of smaller enamel jewels and floral charms, which bring Floris’ perfumes to life. Each jewel is hand-sculpted in wax, cast in silver and either gold-plated or enamelled, using light and colour to bring out the polysensory qualities of the floral world.

The Ned
Daniel W Fletcher Patchwork-Scraps Workshop (Workshop: 11th May 2022, 18:30 - 20:30)
A workshop guided by British fashion designer Daniel Fletcher. Over a two-hour session, participants are shown various forms of patchworking and ways to recycle leftover fabrics and materials. Attendees are provided with materials to create your own patchwork-scraps collage, which can be turned into a cushion cover, wall hanging or wearable garment. Guided by the DWF team, no previous sewing experience is necessary and all abilities are welcome.

The New Craftsmen
Plant Explorations at The New Craftsmen (Exhibition: 10th May 2022 to 15th May 2022, 11:00 - 18:00)
To mark their 10-year anniversary, The New Craftsmen has invited their makers to reflect upon, and take inspiration from, the evolution and uses of their craft along with the skill and imagination of makers across the centuries, and respond by creating their own unique pieces. ‘Plant Explorations’ delves into the making traditions centralised around plants, and humanity’s ever resourceful, ingenious and imaginative approach to finding practical and beautiful solutions for their needs. Throughout London Craft Week, visitors of the exhibition can observe and participate in the making process; gathering around the table with basketmaker Hilary Burns, who is crafting string from plants, and multi-disciplinary maker Lola Lely, who is hand dipping some of her spectacular plant specimens into wax to create delicate artworks.

Roksanda
Conversations in Form and Composition at Roksanda (Exhibition: 9th May 2022 to 13th May 2022, 10:30 - 18:00)
Designed in collaboration with Sir David Adjaye OBE, the ROKSANDA store at 9 Mount Street in Mayfair provides a creative gallery space to host and champion the works of both young and established female artists and makers, encouraging diverse creativity and reinforcing the brand’s belief in supporting women. In celebration of London Craft Week, a selection of works by female ceramist Bronwen Grieves (@bronwen.grieves) are exhibited throughout the ROKSANDA store inviting conversations in form and composition. As a largely self-taught artist, Grieves builds and fires all her work in her garden studio in Nottingham. Informed by her extensive collection of mid-century modernist objects, her works strive to balance structure with fluidity, using organic and inorganic forms as a reference point.

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars

The Rolls-Royce name is synonymous with true luxury and exacting levels of craftsmanship. Extraordinary expressions of luxury, produced by the marque’s ‘Bespoke Collective’ of designers, engineers and craftspeople, are the centrepiece of this year’s London Craft Week event, ‘Crafting Phantom’. Blending heritage, master craftsmanship, modernity and luxury, this exhibition celebrates the remarkable works of craft done by Rolls-Royce’s highly skilled artisans to create the pinnacle of the marque, Rolls-Royce Phantom. A global public debut of highly bespoke and unique works created for the flagship motor car are on display in Rolls-Royce’s Mayfair residence.
In addition, on Friday 13th May, Rolls-Royce’s artisans offer a rare insight into the world of the leading luxury marque via a LinkedIn stream at 1pm. During the session, the artisans share the design process, influences and inspiration behind their creations.

Smythson

Join Smythson as they celebrate the art of leather craftsmanship in collaboration with textile artist Lora Avedian, breathing new life into Smythson’s surplus materials through a series of bespoke artworks. The collaboration sees Lora transform Smythson’s surplus leather into a series of exclusive artworks, embracing the values of sustainability that underpin Smythson’s craftsmanship. Lora often uses scrap and vintage materials to create her works, favouring slow processes that nod to traditional craftsmanship techniques. She finds inspiration in antique textiles and folk costumery, combining traditional embroidery and embellishments to create modern artefacts.
On Wednesday 11th May, Lora is at Smythson Sloane Street to share her craft. In the evening, she hosts an interactive creative workshop in-store, where visitors can create their own abstract textile artwork using Smythson leathers.

Sabina Savage

Sabina Savage is an illustrator and print designer who uses her craft to create exquisite scarves and apparel. Visit the pop-up and exhibition at Old Spitalfields Market to view a selection of Sabina’s hand-rendered drawings and explore the finished products. On Monday 11th May, Sabina hosts a panel discussion with visionary creators and industry leaders including jeweller and engraver Castro Smith and ceramic artist Joseph Dupré. Together, they will explore the art of storytelling in their own way, followed by drinks reception. On Monday 12th May, hear Sabina discuss her creative process, from storytelling to placement print.

The Victoria & Albert Museum
Inspired in Glass (Talk: 13th May 2022, 14:00 - 15:15)
Hear what inspires glass artists, and how they translate this into the most fragile of mediums. As part of the International Year of Glass and London Craft Week, the V&A is delighted to welcome three glass artists for this inspirational panel discussion. Hear from Anthony Amoako-Attah, Laura Quinn and James Maskrey as they showcase their work before discussing their inspiration and processes with V&A senior curator Reino Liefkes. There is also the opportunity to purchase a combined ticket, which includes a guided tour of the Glass Gallery with Reino after the event.
