When we say the word “Earth” in the context of Earth Day most of us think of our amazingly perfect planet, a rock suspended in space that took billions of years to develop life. What I think of is far more down-to-earth. Go to your garden, a field, or a park. Get on your hands and knees and press your nose to the ground. That is the Earth that I think of.
Be still for a moment and observe the life that is there. It is astonishing. Within one square foot of soil there are millions of lifeforms, hundreds of animals, and they, my friend, are the beginning of everything that keeps us alive. Without a healthy earth we cannot feed ourselves.
My grandfather, Philipp Wolf III, recognised this back in the Fifties. He started to try and make a difference through his work around examining the health of streams and rivers in southern Sweden – where he observed and wrote about the harm over-farming was doing at the time. Harm that continues today.
For my part I am dedicated to continuing his legacy and I am proud to say WOLF now holds the Butterfly Mark. Being accountable ensures we continue to review what we do, how we work and what our products are made of to reduce our environmental impact.
Since 1970, Earth Day has brought understanding to us that protecting the environment is the right thing to do on so many levels. Bringing that awareness to as many people as possible can only be a good thing. For me it must start with a basic understanding of where it all begins.
Ten years ago I stopped eating meat, got down close to the ground, started to see how the plants and animals were all interconnected and that we are in fact interlopers that do nothing to add back to it, we only take. I urge you now to take a moment to turn that tide, to review your business and see what you can do to make the earth’s future a better one.
So go on, get on your hands and knees, touch the ground, feel the life that is there and say, “Thank You”.
