Walpole: In a world where we’re always available, how do you separate your personal time from your work time?

Stuart Shaw: Navigating the delicate balance between work and personal life has long been a struggle for me, but the challenges were particularly pronounced until the pandemic prompted a shift in perspective. It blurred boundaries between professional and personal spheres, leading me to recognise the importance of setting clear limits. Implementing structured boundaries became crucial; setting specific working hours allowed me to safeguard precious time for unwinding at home, particularly relishing the simple pleasure of sharing an evening meal with my partner. However, as both my partner and I are in the hospitality industry, it's easy to slip into work-related discussions even during leisure time. To counter this, we established a firm rule: after dinner, we consciously switch off from work matters. Admittedly, old habits die hard, and I find myself occasionally sneaking a peek at my inbox before bedtime or upon waking. Nevertheless, these intentional efforts have significantly improved my ability to disconnect and cherish moments of respite amidst the incessant demands of modern life.

What’s one thing you do after the workday to help you unwind?

After a long day at work, one of the most effective ways for me to unwind is by spending quality time with our dog, Dash. As soon as I step through the door, I'm greeted with boundless enthusiasm and affection that instantly melt any lingering stress or tension. There's something incredibly therapeutic about the simple joy and unconditional love of a dog. Whether it's going for a leisurely walk and playing fetch in the local parks, or simply cuddling on the couch, every moment spent with Dash is a distraction from working life. Watching him frolic and explore the world with unabashed enthusiasm reminds me to appreciate the small pleasures in life and to live in the present moment. Our time together is not just about relaxation: it's also about connection and companionship too, as I recently learnt on a leadership course with my peers and a couple of horses!

What activity do you do in your time away from the office that helps you relax and re-centre after a stressful week?

One activity I find incredibly rejuvenating after a stressful week is getting a massage. The soothing touch of a skilled masseuse helps to alleviate tension in my muscles, easing the physical manifestations of stress while bringing me mental and emotional release. During the massage, I find my mind gradually unwinding as my body sinks into a state of blissful calm. It's a precious opportunity to let go of worries and the relentless demands of work. As the massage therapist works their magic, kneading away knots and releasing built-up tension, I feel myself becoming more grounded and centred. After a massage, I emerge feeling like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I feel refreshed, revitalised, and ready to tackle whatever comes my way. It's a small but essential investment in my well-being that pays dividends in terms of increased productivity, creativity, and overall happiness.

What’s something you’ve read, listened to or seen in your spare time that’s helped you at work?

The Netflix series Emily in Paris springs to mind. This lighthearted comedy-drama follows the adventures of Emily, a young American woman who moves to Paris for a job opportunity in marketing. While the series primarily focuses on Emily's experiences navigating the cultural differences and challenges of working in a foreign city, it also touches on themes such as ambition, resilience, and adaptability. Throughout the series, Emily demonstrates determination and creativity in her approach to work, often finding innovative solutions to overcome obstacles and achieve success in her career. Additionally, her interactions with colleagues and clients highlight the importance of communication, collaboration, and building meaningful relationships in the workplace. Emily in Paris serves as an entertaining and relatable reminder that embracing new experiences, embracing challenges, and maintaining a positive attitude can lead to personal and professional growth, even in unfamiliar environments. I loved it and I cannot wait for the next series.

After home and the office, where’s your favourite ‘third space’?

After the familiarity of home and the structured environment of the office, my favourite third space is undoubtedly a local beer garden or social space shared with friends. There's something truly special about the relaxed atmosphere and communal spirit of these settings, where laughter and conversation flow freely amid the clinking of glasses and the hum of background chatter. Surrounded by good company and enveloped in the warm embrace of friendship, I find myself effortlessly unwinding and letting go of any stresses. It's a place where time seems to stand still as we bond over shared experiences, swapping stories and trading anecdotes late into the evening, especially in the summer months.

On Sunday night, how do you prepare yourself for the week ahead?

On Sunday nights, I like to take some time to prepare myself for the week ahead. I clear out my inbox, respond to any urgent emails and flag those that require my attention during the week. Next, I review my diary or appointments to get a sense of what's coming up. This helps me mentally prepare for any meetings or commitments I have scheduled. Additionally, I like to think ahead and consider any key events or projects that may require extra preparation or attention. By taking these proactive steps, I feel more organised and ready to tackle whatever the week throws my way.

Best reason you've had to turn your out of office on recently?

A skiing trip in Switzerland. With freezing cold temperatures and the thrill of hitting the slopes, it was simply impossible to check my phone while on the mountain. So, I embraced the opportunity to disconnect entirely, immersing myself in the exhilarating experience of skiing and enjoying the breathtaking scenery of the Swiss Alps. It was a chance to fully unwind, recharge, and prioritise physical activity and adventure over work responsibilities.

The OUT OF OFFICE hotlist:

Your go-to out of office outfit: a nice pair of jeans, a comfortable T-shirt, and a fashionable sweater – perfect for relaxed days around the house or leisurely walks in the park with Dash.

Your happy place anywhere in the world: undoubtedly Zermatt ski resort. The majestic slopes and stunning scenery never fail to fill me with joy and serenity.

Your favourite bar or restaurant: Recently I have been spending a lot of time at The Donovan Bar...I wonder why? My current go to drink is the spicy martini but I cannot wait to work my way through the new menu coming soon.

Something sporting you booked recently that you'd recommend:
Recently, I booked a visit to the Bluebird on Coniston Water, where Sir Malcolm Campbell set world water speed records. Following its restoration, the Bluebird is now on display, offering a glimpse into this historic achievement. It's a must-visit spot for history buffs and adventure enthusiasts alike, with the added bonus of stunning views and water sports opportunities on Coniston Water.

Something you've listened to or read recently that you'd recommend and why: I highly recommend Brown's Hotel: A Family Affair, a recently published exploration of the esteemed hotel's history since its establishment in 1832. Hot off the press and delving into nearly two centuries of heritage, this book offers captivating insights into Brown's Hotel's evolution into a revered institution of luxury hospitality.

A hobby you'd like to cultivate: Skiing - for its combination of physical activity, breathtaking scenery, and social enjoyment on the slopes.

A luxury that’s actually a necessity: A massage - a necessity for rejuvenation and self-care, essential for maintaining physical and mental well-being.

Best luxury under £25: Since partnering with Charbonnel et Walker as our festive partner last year, I have fallen in love with its Bittermints. With our Brown's Hotel discount they fall to the right side of this budget!
