Wedgwood’s modern interpretation of an 18th-century tea garden, created with designer Jo Thompson has been awarded a Gold medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
Designed specifically as a garden for a woman, the Wedgwood garden includes a feature bronze pavilion, meandering stream, pond with stepping stones, harmonious planting and naturalistic rocks and boulders.
Beautiful willow species, Salix exigua, are dotted throughout the garden, referencing the iconic Wedgwood pattern as well as weeping feature trees and a stunning kintsugi style path, snakes through the garden. The delicate strands of bronze echo the ancient Japanese practice of celebrating the art of precious scars in broken porcelain. Jo's design for the sculptural pavilion was brought to life by a team at the Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge.
Contemplative in atmosphere, the planting palette reflects the 18th-century colour trials carried out by Josiah Wedgwood with hues of pale yellow, periwinkle, inky purple, rust and peach, all colours that are being hailed as iconic for Chelsea Flower Show 2018.
Speaking about the garden Jo Thompson said: “I’m thrilled. It’s been a joy from start to finish and this is a true team effort. It has been wonderful to work with Wedgwood on such a special garden. I’m so pleased to be back at the greatest flower show on earth with such an inspirational and passionate team of people, I couldn’t be happier.”
Christian Bachler, SVP of The English Crystal Living Business added “We are delighted the Wedgwood has been awarded a Gold Medal. It has been an incredible experience working with Jo and we are looking forward to bringing the garden to its permanent home at the World of Wedgwood, Stoke on Trent.”
The Gold Medal Wedgwood Garden will be relocated to the World of Wedgwood visitor centre to join Sam Oven’s Gold Medal Winning Garden which was relocated from RHS Chatsworth 2017. Wedgwood’s investment into their gardens continues their commitment towards sustainability and enhancing lives of the local community.
The RHS Chelsea Flower Show is open until Saturday 25th May.
