Araminta Campbell shares her Out of Office essentials

In our Out of Office interview series, we speak to Walpole member executives at the top of their game about how they live their lives away from their desks – the habits that help them decompress, the activities that re-centre their minds, and the little luxuries that they can't live without. This week, it's the turn of Araminta Campbell, Founder and Creative Director of her eponymous Scottish woven accessories brand.

In a world where we’re always available, how do you separate your personal time from your work time?

This is a work in progress, I don’t really have clearly defined time either work or play. I have two energetic boys who demand my undivided attention when I am out of the office and when I am with them I like to be fully focused on them.

What’s one thing you do after the work day to help you unwind?

Reading bedtime stories to my children – I find it hugely therapeutic and actually very relaxing. However, their bedtime routine doesn’t always go to plan. In that case, a gin and tonic is much needed.

What activity do you do in your time away from the office that helps you relax and recentre after a stressful week?

Spending time with my family and having what my eldest son calls "a second breakfast" – my husband and I take turns to take a ‘lie-in’ (until 8am!) on a weekend.

What’s something you’ve read, listened to or seen in your spare time that’s helped you at work?

I recetnly listened to the audiobook of If In Doubt Wash Your Hair by Anya Hindmarch. It helped me to stop feeling guilty about creating that separation at the end of the day to focus on my children and my homelife. Also, this book made me feel much better about my need for chocolate on a bad day, and that of all the crutches – this is one I can live with!

After home and the office, where’s your favourite third space?

My favourite third space is out in the countryside – this is where there is a blurred line between office and home for me. Creativity is my tonic and every dog walk becomes inspiration for a new design. I find it so therapeutic.

On Sunday night, how do you prepare yourself for the week ahead?

On a Sunday night, I really try and dedicate time to just curling up in front of the fire with my husband. I like to deal with the week ahead on Monday morning, if possible.

Best reason you've had to turn your Out of Office on recently?

I am notoriously bad at switching on my ‘Out of Office’ and taking holiday, but shortly I will be doing both and getting a dose of Vitamin D on a hot holiday!

The OUT OF OFFICE hotlist:

Your go-to Out of Office outfit: Jeans, a cosy knit and slippers.

Your happy place anywhere in the world: For me, Scotland can’t be beaten. I feel so lucky to live and work here. I am a real home girl.

Your favourite bar or restaurant: We live in a rural location and rarely get the chance to eat out. However, when we do, our biggest treat is fish and chips in the Flying Stag at the Fife Arms with my family.

Something you booked recently that you'd recommend: I was incredibly lucky to have a tour of the Mingei International Museum in San Diego by the architect, which gave us the story behind the renaissance of this iconic building. I recommend a visit if you are in California.

Something you've listened to or read recently that you'd recommend: My old school friend Alexander Chapman Campbell’s piano music relaxes me like nothing else.

A hobby you'd like to cultivate: I would love to try woodturning, glassblowing or pottery throwing. Weaving is very linear and these are all non-linear!

A luxury that’s actually a necessity: An unbroken night’s sleep.

Best luxury under £25: A cup of Fortnum & Mason Breakfast Tea, drunk piping hot!
