The Power List Mavericks | Frieda Gormley and Javvy M Royle, Co-Founders, House of Hackney

Bringing together their respective experience in fashion and art, Frieda Gormley and Javvy M Royle founded House of Hackney in a quest ‘to take the beige out of interiors’. House of Hackney has since evolved to include interiors, fashion and lifestyle divisions and is renowned for ripping up the rule book and dreaming up iconic, inspired prints.

What keeps you motivated?

One of our greatest motivations is unlocking the forces of nature and bringing the botanical world into our lives through beautiful interior design. Then, as much as we thrive off the fast pace of London life, escaping in nature – whether that's swimming in a local outdoor lido or exploring the English countryside on weekends – is integral for recharging our batteries and sparking our imaginations.

Where do you find your inspiration?

We find inspiration in everything, from films and fairy tales to the melting pot of culture and creativity that brews in East London. The music we listen to while designing is particularly important, as it ignites the ideas and concepts behind each new collection. And of course, the earth is an eternal source of inspiration for us – each of our designs draws upon nature’s sublime forms and colour palettes.

Book of British Luxury

The front covers of the 2018 and 2019 editions of the Walpole Book of British Luxury have been designed by former Walpole Brands of Tomorrow Rory Dobner (BoT 2017) and Timorous Beasties (BoT 2008). Continuing this tradition, we are delighted to announce that House of Hackney, an alumni from the Brands of Tomorrow Class of 2015, will design the cover of the 2020 book, which will have an overarching theme focusing on the future of luxury.
