Walpole: Tell us about the history of your brand…

Noah Bier: Since 2017, Makers Cabinet has designed a range of high-quality drawing and writing tools. We are inspired by time-honoured materials and mechanisms, and we believe items should be designed to last and to improve with time and use.

Makers Cabinet’s design process merges traditional craft processes with modern methods such as 3D printing and CNC milling. We work with the finest factories across the world and utilise a globally distributed logistics operation to offer the highest service possible to both customers purchasing our products and those for whom we carry out design consultancy work.

What is your brand best known for?

We pioneered our Høvel pencil plane and our Iris drawing compass – two radically unique and quality drawing and writing tools.

What has been a significant achievement in your company’s timeline

We are so proud of our ongoing collaboration with the Royal Mint. For the Royal Mint's new brand 886 collection, we have licensed designs and acted as design consultants, material suppliers and collaborators. This project has allowed us to produce our products entirely in the United Kingdom which is a significant achievement for us.

Why do you love the brand?

The brand has been my baby for seven years. I started it as a fresh-faced, naive 19-year-old who made many mistakes and has learnt so much along the way. Seven years on, we are still learning but we have achieved so much, especially with us moving from a director-to-consumer model to an omni-channel with many B2B relationships.

Why does your brand represent the very best in British luxury?

We believe that an artist deserves the best and most long-lasting tools to inspire their creativity. Our tools do just that, representing time-honoured materials and mechanisms that add a certain luxury to the creation process.

What attracted you to becoming a Walpole member?

We have accessed the most amazing network of businesses over the past year as a Brand of Tomorrow. My partner and I have never had a job before and our network is limited by the fact that we are in our mid-twenties and have not had much experience. Through the Brands of Tomorrow programme we built relationships with so many brands including Savoir Beds, Future Laboratory, Cunard, G . F Smith, James Cropper, William Grant & Sons and Mishcon De Reya. Without Walpole, we don't believe many of these executives would have given us the time of day. We believe we have reciprocated and offered these brands a lot in return. We cannot wait to build our network and further relationships within the network.

If you could collaborate with another Walpole member, which one would you choose?

A dream is to one day make eye pencil sharpeners and pencil holders for a makeup brand. As designers, we also love Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, dunhill and Burberry, and it would be fantastic to create something with any one of these brands.

Tell us about an exciting development or new launch for your brand in the coming months...

Over the next few months, we will be launching a larger second version of our best-selling product Iris. The Iris LF (Large Format) reflects the demands of our customers for an even bigger drawing tool and it will be available on the pre-order crowdfunding website Kickstarter. We hope this product will be launching at the same time as a major Hollywood feature film that features the Iris and other products as major props. Stay tuned.
